The assessment of foot lesions at slaughter in laying hens

In laying hen farms, birds’ feet are exposed to prolonged contact with soil, litter, housing equipment such as wire floors or badly designed perches, pecking by conspecific, and may develop lesions. These foot lesions, linked to several factors, can cause discomfort and/or pain to the animals and may lead to mortality. Although well assessed on farm, foot lesions could also be observed after slaughter to assess laying hens’ welfare on-farm and the quality of their housing conditions.

REPORT ON THE SCIENTIFIC STUDY IN COMMERCIAL SLAUGHTERHOUSES OF TURKEYS WITH WATERBATH

Technical study aimed at evaluating the prevalence and the inter-observer repeatability of the most valid and feasible animal-based indicators of the state of consciousness after waterbath stunning in turkeys before bleeding (tonic seizure, breathing, spontaneous blinking and vocalisation) and during bleeding (wing flapping, breathing, spontaneous swallowing and head shaking).

Evaluation of the protection of the welfare of laying hens in Germany

Last September 14th, the final report of an audit of Germany in order to evaluate the protection of the welfare of laying hens at all stages of production was uploaded online. This audit was carried out from 21st, September to 1st, October 2021.

The objective was to assess the effectiveness of official controls to ensure the protection of the welfare of laying hens at all stages of production. The conclusions indicate, for example, that the welfare of laying hens is a priority to authorities and stakeholders and that the system of official controls is well-integrated and effective, with requirements of the national legislation more stringent than EU ones.

Other conclusions are available in the report on the European Commission website
